Orthopedic Surgery Options
At Jenison Animal Hospital, we are proud to offer a variety of orthopedic surgeries to address numerous issues that our veterinary patients may encounter. We offer patient-based orthopedic care designed to keep dogs and cats comfortable and moving well. Our services include treatment for cranial cruciate ligament (CCL or “ACL”) injuries, medial patellar luxation, and amputations when that option offers the best continued quality of life. Each patient begins with a consultation with Dr. Hilferty, including a hands-on exam and sedated calibrated X-rays to create a clear, individualized treatment plan. If you are not already a client of Jenison Animal Hospital, we are happy to work with your primary care veterinarian on a referral basis for your pet's needs - it takes a village! Schedule online or call us anytime; we’re happy to help guide you through the next steps.
Modified Maquet Procedure
A Modified Maquet Procedure (a type of Tibial Tuberosity Advancement, or TTA) is a surgical procedure used to treat ruptures or tears of the cranial cruciate ligament in the knee. It works by changing the angle of the knee so it becomes stable again without relying on the damaged ligament. This helps reduce pain, improve comfort, and allow dogs to return to using the affected leg more normally after recovery.
Extracapsular Lateral Suture Stabilisation
Lateral suture repair (also known as ELSS) is a surgical option used to treat torn cranial cruciate ligament injuries (CCL or “ACL” tear) in dogs or cats. The procedure stabilizes the knee by placing a strong suture on the outside of the joint to mimic the function of the damaged ligament. This helps reduce pain and improve stability, allowing pets to return to comfortable, everyday activities as they heal.
Medial Patellar Luxation Correction
This procedure, which can be referred to as Tibial Tuberosity Transposition (TTT), is a method to correct a condition in dogs and cats where the kneecap slips out of its normal position, often causing skipping, limping, or discomfort. Surgery corrects the alignment of the kneecap tendon and the groove it sits in, helping it stay in place during movement. This improves comfort, stability, and long-term joint health, allowing pets to move more normally and with less pain.
Trochlear Block Recession
Block trochleoplasty (or block recession) in dogs is a surgical procedure used to treat medial patellar luxation (dislocating kneecap) by deepening the groove (trochlear sulcus) at the bottom of the femur. A rectangular block of bone and cartilage is removed, the underlying bone is deepened, and the block is replaced, creating a deeper, more stable, and smoother groove for the kneecap.
Ridge Stop Implant Surgery
The ridge stop implant procedure is a minimally invasive, veterinary surgical technique used to correct canine and feline patellar luxation (slipping kneecap) by fixing a synthetic polyethylene ridge to the femur with screws. It acts as a barrier, deepening the trochlear groove to prevent the kneecap from sliding sideways, and is often used as an alternative to traditional, more invasive sulcoplasty procedures.
Amputation
Amputation is a surgical procedure to remove a leg in dogs and cats when it is severely injured, diseased, or painful. While it may sound drastic, most pets adjust remarkably well, quickly learning to move, run, and play on three legs. The surgery helps relieve pain and improve the quality of life, allowing pets to stay active and happy.
Post-Surgery Care
After any orthopedic procedure, your pet needs strict rest and careful monitoring. All of our clients are sent home with special care instructions for each patient after their procedure. Any post-operative recheck exams with the doctor are scheduled and included with the cost of the surgery.
